Having just been promoted to this division, Team 3 have done ok so far this season, admittedly being thoroughly humped by the top four teams in the division but picking up points in the rest of their fixtures. But this was always going to be tough one, John Yau, Colin Clark and Ian Moran are all very capable players and the hill to climb looked a chunk higher when Team 3’s captain received a phone call from Artur in the afternoon saying he was ill, he “knows there’s only three of us; he’ll play but he’s nae weel” (in a Polish accent).

The first half of the fixture including three surprise results; Alastair beating John (he’s only beaten him once before in competitive play), Chandru edging out Ian in a tight 5-setter and Alastair edging out the higher rated Colin in an even tighter 5-setter. 4-1 to the away team, can we do this?

And then the tide turned, as it often does. Chandru and Alastair failed to make any impact at all against the experienced pairing of Ian and Colin in the doubles and Artur soldiering through, playing his last game early but not picking up any wins for the evening in his unwell state. 4-4 it was and the momentum was definitely with Murrayfield.

Chandru v Colin and Alastair V Ian to decide the match with a win in either direction or a draw to settle it. Team 3 dug their heels in and in 9 sets managed to steal a narrow win. Good determination!
