NewsGoma’s first league game

Before we hear of the exploits of Goma’s first league game and also of Team 2 tonight, I’m late in giving the result of Team 3’s Monday trip to the Gyle Pop in and Play to take on Murrayfield IX, none of whose three players can be older than 14. Our team 3 was doubly handicapped by the known absence of Ken after his angioplasty on Friday (with Alan kindly agreeing to play up), but also because Shashi pulled a muscle in his back on the morning of the fixture, and it prevented him from being able to bend properly. So before we knew where we were, we were 5-0 down. This is a frustrating fixture because if we had had the Shashi of last week, he would have won his three. Anyway, from 5-0 down, George inflicted the first league defeat of the season on the precocious Nichole Lee, despite missing several returns off her serve when she stamped her foot when serving. Shashi and George then pulled themselves together to level the doubles at two ends all, only to falter at 9-9 in the fifth end with two unforced errors, including a service fault! But there was indeed some good stuff played in the doubles match. Shashi, despite his limitations, was just steady enough to combat the flashy shots of William Wang, more good rallies again, and finally George didn’t allow himself to be distracted by his opponents’ youth to beat Rory Thomso in four ends. So a 7-3 home win. Many thanks to Alan for playing up, and for concentrating so hard in his second singles match against William that he didn’t realise when the match was over!
